The short answer

What are the best Sense HR alternatives in the UK?

There is no single best Sense HR alternative. HollyHR fits a small team that wants focused core HR, controlled early-access pricing of Free for up to 10 active employees or Standard at £2 per active employee per month before tax, and an inspectable 14-area archive. Breathe HR fits established UK-SME core plus workforce add-ons; CharlieHR fits performance, engagement, perks and optional advice or recruitment; Sage HR fits Sage-oriented mobile and modular HR; BrightHR fits employers buying operational software with advice and safety support.

Sense HR may still be the right answer. Team combines banded core HR with native mobile apps, performance, an AMI assistant, a data loader and UK chat support. Elite is a materially broader annual product with ATS, custom screens, multi-entity support, advanced workflows and agents, time and attendance, hardware options, read/write API, webhooks and implementation support. Keep Sense when those shipped jobs are the reason you bought it.

HollyHR is on this list and publishes it. That conflict is a reason for more evidence, not less disclosure.

Shortlist method

Four questions before the feature grid.

These decide whether a product difference will matter after the demo.

Name the Sense tier

Team and Elite have different contracts, prices, APIs and operating scope. Compare the product you actually use.

Price the exact band

Model headcount, Team's next threshold, annual discount or Elite commitment, VAT and any hardware.

Inventory the broad jobs

Mobile, performance, ATS, agents, workflows, attendance and connectors need an owner if the replacement lacks them.

Separate reports from exit

CSV, Excel, PDF and API reports are useful, but they do not prove a complete account-and-files offboarding package.

Five credible options

The shortlist, with the awkward bit included.

“Best for” is a fit statement. Every card also names the price shape, the trade-off and the first-party source.

01

Focused core

HollyHR

This is us

Best for A small UK team that wants focused core HR, current micro-team pricing and an inspectable exit more than Sense's mobile, performance or workforce breadth.

People records, leave, sickness records, contracted working patterns, documents, onboarding, fixed reports and a broad 14-area organisation archive in a deliberately compact product.

Price shape

Current early-access pricing: Free for up to 10 active employees; Standard is £2 per active employee per month before tax.

  • No time-limited trial on the current Free plan
  • 14-area organisation ZIP with eligible uploaded files and explicit manifests
  • Documented organisation-scoped beta API and hosted MCP reads
Watch for

Controlled early access with a young track record. No native mobile app, performance, ATS, e-signatures, custom reports, advanced automation, attendance hardware or comparable connector and agent breadth. API writes are Standard+, approved and controlled.

02

Established UK core

Breathe HR

Best for A UK SME that wants an established core product, employee app and paid workforce add-ons.

Core HR, leave, documents, performance and reporting sit beside paid rota/time, learning, recruitment, expenses and health-and-safety add-ons.

Price shape

Headcount bands currently start at £24 a month for 1–10 employees; workforce add-ons are priced separately.

  • Established UK-SME operating and customer history
  • Employee app, mobile-optimised HR and performance tools
  • Paid rota/time, learning, recruitment, expense and safety add-ons
Watch for

The price changes at headcount thresholds and rises with the add-ons selected; data/report exports and document retrieval use separate processes.

03

Culture + advice

CharlieHR

Best for A startup that wants polished core HR, engagement and perks, with advice or recruitment available alongside it.

Core Charlie includes onboarding, time off, employee records, engagement, performance reviews, perks and key integrations; Advice and Recruit are paid additions.

Price shape

Headcount bands. The current calculator lists £20 a month for 1–4 people after its six-month offer, and £45 for 5–14; Advice and Recruit cost extra.

  • Founder-friendly core HR and onboarding
  • Engagement, performance reviews and perks included
  • Optional one-to-one HR advice and recruitment products
Watch for

Free access is a seven-day trial; price changes at team-size thresholds, and Advice or Recruit materially changes the monthly total.

04

Sage ecosystem

Sage HR

Best for A team that values a recognised vendor, native mobile access and modular workforce features.

Core HR and leave sit beside optional performance, timesheets, shift scheduling, expenses and recruitment modules.

Price shape

Core HR plus Leave Management is currently £5 per employee per month; per-person modules and fixed-price Recruitment are extra.

  • Native employee and manager mobile app
  • Performance, timesheet, shift and expense modules
  • Natural evaluation path for an existing Sage customer
Watch for

The price rises with every employee and selected module; the broadest setup is a different budget and operating model from focused core HR.

05

Software + advice

BrightHR

Best for An employer that wants rotas, time, expenses and performance alongside optional HR, safety and wellbeing advice.

BrightHR combines operational HR software with larger service packages for employment advice, health and safety and employee wellbeing.

Price shape

Package and headcount pricing with fixed-term agreements. BrightHR currently offers 24-, 36- and 60-month terms; obtain the exact quote and renewal basis.

  • Rota, time, expense and performance tools in the software
  • Optional 24/7 HR and employment-law advice
  • Health-and-safety software, advice and wellbeing services
Watch for

A broader service purchase with a fixed-term commitment, not a like-for-like substitute for a lightweight rolling core-HR subscription.

Match the reason

Choose by need, not by logo recognition.

Keeping Sense HR is included because staying can be the most rational decision.

The honest incumbent check

Where Sense HR may still be the right answer.

An alternatives page should be capable of recommending no change.

KEEP SENSE HR WHEN

The current fit is doing its job.

  • Sense Team's native mobile apps, performance tools, AMI assistant and UK support are part of daily work
  • The current Team headcount band remains good value and the next threshold is acceptable
  • Sense Elite's ATS, custom screens, multi-entity model or 100-plus workflows are day-one requirements
  • Attendance, geofencing, clocking hardware, broad API/webhooks or implementation support justify Elite's annual model
REOPEN THE MARKET WHEN

A measured mismatch keeps recurring.

  • Your team uses focused core HR and carries platform breadth it neither needs nor wants to administer
  • A current £0 micro-team plan or simple £2-per-active-person Standard price changes the decision
  • You want one self-serve organisation archive with explicit manifests, eligible-file treatment and package limits
  • You can name and safely replace every Sense-only workflow, integration, report, mobile or attendance job

If HollyHR makes the shortlist

Switch from Sense HR without pretending it is one click.

The current importer is a focused people-data start, not a complete Sense HR migration.

1

1. Inventory before cancelling

List active and former people, reporting lines, leave, sickness, documents, signatures, performance, applicants, custom screens, reports, workflows, agents, integrations, attendance records and devices.

2

2. Retain source evidence in separate formats

Sense documents custom and scheduled reporting with CSV, Excel, PDF and API exports. Request the vendor's current full-account offboarding extract and uploaded-file process separately; a complete public exit-package format was not found.

Do not treat a report export as proof that applicants, automation state, integrations, attendance records or document bytes are included.
3

3. Map a separate people CSV

Prepare a suitable people CSV, then manually map HollyHR's focused 12-field people shape. The generic importer accepts up to 500 rows and 2 MB; there is no Sense-specific adapter.

Managers, leave history and balances, documents, pay and bank data, working-pattern history, performance, applicants, workflows and attendance need separate handling.
4

4. Rebuild, reconcile and parallel-run

Assign an owner to every retained specialist job, then check roles, working days, balances, sensitive visibility, current requests and document placement before making HollyHR authoritative.

There is no one-click Sense-to-HollyHR migration and no honest universal migration time.
Keep Sense HR available until people, balances, permissions and files reconcile.

  • HollyHR is in controlled early access and has a younger operating and customer history than Sense HR
  • There is no native mobile app, performance-review module, e-signature flow or custom and scheduled report builder
  • Recruitment, custom screen design and multi-entity administration are not shipped HollyHR modules; automated right-to-work identity verification is not shipped, while HollyHR records evidence and an authorised employer decision only
  • Advanced workflow libraries, a comparable built-in agent suite, broad native connectors and attendance hardware are not available
  • HollyHR does not automate starter/leaver or effective-dated working-week leave proration, or irregular-hours statutory entitlement
  • Retrospective sickness entry, fit-note, return-to-work and SSP casework are not automated; aggregate category, month and department reporting is visible to every signed-in member and can identify sickness in a small team
  • The generic importer is a manually mapped 12-field people start, not a Sense adapter, and does not ingest specialist state
  • The 14-area archive is broad rather than a complete specialist-state round trip; eligible binaries are capped at 25 MB each and 100 MB total, while working-pattern history, onboarding journeys, policy and balance ledgers, custom fields, full compliance state and audit history are excluded
  • Beta API reads are approved and organisation-scoped; write-capable API/MCP access is Standard+, approved and controlled, MCP writes are environment-disabled by default, and this is not equivalent to Sense Elite's wider REST and webhook surface
  • Current identity projections and the unenforced Allow login control make HollyHR unsuitable for confidential future starters

Questions people ask

What is the best alternative to Sense HR?

It depends on the job. HollyHR fits focused core HR and current early-access Free/£2 pricing; Breathe fits established UK-SME core and add-ons; CharlieHR fits performance, engagement, perks and optional advice; Sage HR fits Sage-oriented mobile and modular HR; BrightHR fits software bundled with advice and safety support. Keep Sense HR when Elite's ATS, workflows, attendance, agents or API breadth are the fit.

Is HollyHR a direct replacement for Sense HR?

Only when the team needs HollyHR's focused shipped core and accepts a manual, reconciled migration. HollyHR is not equivalent for Sense HR's native mobile and no-email frontline access, performance reviews, goals and 1-to-1s, built-in AMI, e-signature and document workflows, advanced onboarding and automation, custom screens, multi-entity administration, TrustID-style right-to-work identity verification and scheduled reporting, fit-note, return-to-work and SSP workflows, ATS, shifts, timesheets, geofencing or clock hardware, native integrations, or a complete migration of Sense records, histories, files, balances, signatures, workflows and configuration.

Is HollyHR cheaper than Sense HR?

HollyHR's controlled early-access Free plan is £0 for up to 10 active employees, while Sense Team is £20 for up to 10. HollyHR Standard is £2 per active employee per month before tax, but Sense Team's published bands are cheaper at 25, 50, 100 and 200 people when each band is full. Compare scope, VAT and contract as well as price.

What is the difference between Sense Team and Sense Elite?

Team is a banded core product with mobile apps, performance, an AMI assistant, a data loader and UK chat support. Elite starts from £8 per employee per month on an annual contract and adds ATS, custom screens, multi-entity support, advanced workflows and agents, attendance options, read/write API, webhooks and implementation support.

How does sickness handling compare with Sense HR?

Sense publishes fit-note, return-to-work, Bradford-trigger and SSP workflows. HollyHR records generic current or future Time Off but does not automate retrospective sickness entry, fit-note lifecycle, return-to-work, SSP or trigger casework. Its aggregate category, month and department reporting is currently visible to every signed-in member and can identify sickness in a small team, so test that privacy boundary before switching.

Does HollyHR have AI and API access like Sense HR?

The models differ. Sense ships AMI inside its product and reserves open API and webhooks for Elite. HollyHR has approved organisation-scoped beta API reads and controlled hosted MCP reads; write-capable API/MCP access is Standard+, approved and controlled, and MCP writes are environment-disabled by default. That is not a claim of parity with Sense Elite's wider REST, webhook, workflow and agent surface.

Can HollyHR import our Sense HR account?

No. HollyHR has no Sense HR adapter. Its generic importer maps 12 people fields and accepts up to 500 rows and 2 MB. Managers, working patterns, pay and bank data, leave balances and history, documents, signatures, custom screens, performance records, workflows and integration configuration require separate handling.

Can we export everything from Sense HR before switching?

Sense documents custom and scheduled reports with CSV, Excel, PDF and API export. A current public specification for a complete account-and-files exit package was not found, so request a sample full offboarding extract and uploaded-file process directly rather than assuming report exports contain every specialist record and binary.

How long does switching from Sense HR to HollyHR take?

There is no honest universal time. It depends on the quality of the people CSV and how much manager, leave, document, performance, applicant, report, workflow, integration and attendance state must be rebuilt and reconciled. Keep Sense available until the parallel run and retained source evidence pass review.
