Shift work

In short

Shift work is an arrangement where different periods of work cover hours beyond one standard daytime schedule.

Applies in Great Britain. Northern Ireland differs below.Source-checked by Team Holly on

The pattern makes it shift work

Shift work arranges working hours into separate periods so a service or workplace can operate outside one standard daytime schedule. Shifts may be fixed, rotating, split or overlapping. A published rota records who is expected to work; the shift pattern is the underlying arrangement those entries follow.

Not everyone working a late shift is legally a night worker. Night-worker status depends on how regularly the person works during the defined night period. Check that category separately because it brings specific limits and health-assessment duties.

The Acas working-time guidance explains how shift work connects with working hours, rest and night work.

Design for rest as well as coverage

Start with the work that must be covered, then test the sequence a person actually experiences. Long shifts, quick returns, consecutive nights, unplanned overtime and frequent swaps can create fatigue even when each individual shift looks reasonable.

HSE's shift-design guidance recommends practical controls such as limiting demanding shifts, allowing regular breaks, managing overtime and giving enough recovery when people move between day and night work. These are risk-based guidelines rather than one universal rota formula.

Reconcile the plan with what happened

Record each person's agreed pattern, actual start and finish times, breaks, overtime, call-outs and swaps. Build a clear handover into working time instead of expecting one shift to brief the next off the clock.

Review the pattern when absence, vacancies or seasonal demand increase overtime. Northern Ireland has separate rules and enforcement; use the NI working-hours guidance rather than assuming the Great Britain regulations apply unchanged.
